In June 1983, Keiichi Maebara lives with his friends in the rural village of Hinamizawa. Life is peaceful as Keiichi and Rena Ryugu visit the town landfill in search for clues. Keiichi learns from Jiro Tomitake about the past murders. He also learns about the dam construction proposed by the government five years earlier. The project met with protests and was withdrawn. When Keiichi asks Rena and Mion Sonozaki about any incidents relating to the project, they refuse to reply, which makes him suspicious. He gets even more suspicious as he and Rena discover the statue of Kenta, the parody of Colonel Sanders and Rena leaves to find a machete, he finds a newspaper article about the death of the manager. He learns that one of the killers is still at large.
