Despite Otto and Ram insisting they flee, Subaru decides to first confront Roswaal about Beatrice. Roswaal reveals that what Beatrice has is not a gospel but one of two Tomes of Wisdom, books that tell their reader their future, and that Subaru need only tell her that he is "that person", much to his confusion. Garfiel then finds them, forcing Subaru to flee on his land dragon, Patrasche, with help from Otto and the Ingram villagers while Ram holds him off, but he catches up and kills everyone. While Subaru makes it across the barrier, he is then teleported by Frederica's crystal and falls unconscious. Waking up back at Sanctuary sometime later, Subaru finds it abandoned before being ambushed and devoured by a horde of rabbit Mawbeasts. After respawning, Subaru is traumatized from being eaten alive until Echidna confronts him. She then reveals that she knows about Return By Death and that Subaru can freely speak about it in her space. Upon confirming this, Subaru breaks down, finally able to talk about everything he's been through, and Echidna comforts him.
