Kino and Hermes lie in a field of crimson flowers, where Kino thinks back to when she was eleven years old, but she forgot her original name, which was that of a flower which could easily be turned into an insult. In the past, she met the unassuming traveler Kino and took him to her family's inn to stay for a few days where he repaired an old motorcycle in the basement, and they named it Hermes. She explained that children on their twelfth birthday undergo an operation to become a hardworking adult in the country.
