The defeated general, Harima, is covered with a wolf's fur on his face and cannot take it off. Harima travels to the country of Wa with Obaba, who helped her, and Saruta, the defeated general who was wounded. They help Marimo, the daughter of the dog tribe, who is the land god there. Harima and the others are suddenly attacked by assassins while resting in an old village in Saruta. Harima was unknowingly caught up in the motives of his treacherous retainers, who wanted to expel the land gods and make Buddhism the state religion to increase their power.
