In Mondo in the Dark, Nozomu asks his class, who are sitting in a cabin filled with candles, to come up with a new gag. For every gag that has been done, a candle is blown out. Nozomu says that when all 100 candles are blown out something terrible happens. In Storybook of Failure, Nozomu tells his class how when people are fighting over something, to an outsider it seems like both lose. They find themselves walking in an actual battlefield set in the city to observe the "losing" battles. In a Book of Folktales, it shows how Nozomu, first a positive, normal person as a student, is forced to become the negative man he is today.
