Hitomi and Van go to the Kingdom of Fanelia, of which Van is Prince. Shortly after their arrival, Van gets crowned King for defeating the dragon. Hitomi encounters a cat-girl named Merle, who is very close to Van and dislikes Hitomi. Van's mentor, Balgus, promises to help find a way to return Hitomi home after the coronation. During Van's coronation, the kingdom is attacked by cloaked Guymelefs. In an effort to save the kingdom, Van makes a blood pact with a powerful Guymelef named Escaflowne, and uses it to fight the enemy Guymelefs. He is too late, the kingdom is destroyed, and its people scatter. Van and Hitomi then escape in a strange pillar of light.
